Symbol Emergence in Cognitive Developmental Systems: a Survey
نویسندگان
چکیده
Symbol emergence through a robot’s own interactive exploration of the world without human intervention has been investigated now for several decades. However, methods that enable a machine to form symbol systems in a robust bottom-up manner are still missing. Clearly this shows that we still do not have an appropriate computational understanding that explains symbol emergence in biological and artificial systems. Over the years it became more and more clear that symbol emergence has to be posed as a multi-facetted problem. Therefore, we will first review the history of the symbol emergence problem in different fields showing their mutual relations. Then we will describe recent work and approaches to solve this problem with the aim of providing an integrative and comprehensive overview of symbol emergence for future research.

Graphical Language Games: Interactional Constraints on Representational Form
The emergence of shared symbol systems is considered to be a pivotal moment in human evolution and human development. These changes are normally explained by reference to changes in people's internal cognitive processes. We present 2 experiments which provide evidence that changes in the external, collaborative processes that people use to communicate can also affect the structure and organizat...
متن کاملEmergence of self-organized symbol-based communication in artificial creatures
In this paper, we describe a digital scenario where we simulated the emergence of self-organized symbol-based communication among artificial creatures inhabiting a virtual world of unpredictable predatory events. In our experiment, creatures are autonomous agents that learn symbolic relations in an unsupervised manner, with no explicit feedback, and are able to engage in dynamical and autonomou...
متن کاملIn press in IEEE Transactions in Evolution Computation. Special issue on Evolutionary Computation and Cognitive Systems
This paper describes different types of models for the evolution of communication and language. It uses the distinction between signals, symbols, and words for the analysis of evolutionary models of language. In particular, it show how evolutionary computation techniques, such as Artificial Life, can be used to study the emergence of syntax and symbols from simple communication signals. Initial...
متن کاملMultifractal Dynamics in the Emergence of Cognitive Structure
The complex-systems approach to cognitive science seeks to move beyond the formalism of information exchange and to situate cognition within the broader formalism of energy flow. Changes in cognitive performance exhibit a fractal (i.e., power-law) relationship between size and time scale. These fractal fluctuations reflect the flow of energy at all scales governing cognition. Information transf...
متن کاملOptimization and Quantization in Gradient Symbol Systems: A Framework for Integrating the Continuous and the Discrete in Cognition
Mental representations have continuous as well as discrete, combinatorial properties. For example, while predominantly discrete, phonological representations also vary continuously; this is reflected by gradient effects in instrumental studies of speech production. Can an integrated theoretical framework address both aspects of structure? The framework we introduce here, Gradient Symbol Process...
